Numbers 27-29; Psalm 38:1-12

Numbers 27
1-11 - The Daughters of Zelophehad (Plains of Moab opposite Jericho)
  • Named Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah, they come to Moses, Eleazar, leaders, and "all the congregation" in front of the tabernacle, and ask for their father's inheritance (territory in the new land)
  • Moses asks God, and he agrees.
  • Order of inheritance as a statute: sons - daughters - brothers - nearest kinsman
12-23 - Joshua Appointed Moses' Successor
  • God speaks to Moses of his death, to occur because "you did not show my holiness before their eyes at the waters."
  • Moses is concerned, not for himself, but for the leadership of the people.
  • God chooses Joshua, tells Moses to commission him in front of the people. "You shall give him some of your authority.
Numbers 28 - Offerings
  • Daily - 2 male lambs, grain offering, drink offering
  • On Sabbath - 2 male lambs, flour offering, drink offering
  • Monthly - 2 young bulls, 1 ram, 7 male lambs, flour offerings, drink offerings plus 1 male goat for a sin offering
  • Passover - 14th day of 1st month; 7-day feast; no work on 1st day; 2 young bulls, 1 ram, 7 male lambs, grain offerings, plus daily offerings, drink offerings plus 1 male goat for a sin offering; no work on 7th day
  • Festival of weeks - No work on 1st day; 2 young bulls, 1 ram, 7 male lambs, grain offerings, drink offerings plus 1 male goat for a sin offering
Numbers 29 - More Offerings
  • Festival of Trumpets - 1st day of 7th month; offerings same as for Passover and Festival of Weeks, except it's 1 ram instead of 2
  • Day of Atonement - 10th day of 7th month; offerings same as Festival of Trumpets
  • Festival of Booths - 15th day of 7th month; 7 days - no work on 1st day; 13 bulls, 2 rams, 14 male lambs, grain offerings, drink offerings, plus 1 male goat for a sin offering
    • Days 2 - 7 - Same offerings as Day 1, except number of bulls is decreased by 1 each day
    • Day 8 - Solemn assembly; no work; same as Day of Atonement
  • These are "in addition to your votive offerings and your free-will offerings, as your burnt offerings, your grain offerings, your drink offerings, and your offerings of well-being."
  • Wow! And most of the time, all we do is write a check! Imagine if we had to give out of the food in our cupboards and freezers daily, monthly, then to celebrate 5 other festivals -- one of them for 7 days. And this would be the best food we have -- not leftovers.
Psalm 38:1-12 - The Burden of Sin
3 - "There is no soundness in my flesh because of your indignation; there is no health in my bones because of my sin."
8 - "I am utterly spent and crushed; I groan because of the tumult of my heart."
