Comfort from God

A Moment’s Meditation
The Delta Point
September 1, 2005 (Soon after Hurricane Katrina)

Words of my own seem inconsequential and even flippant in the midst of the devastation that has come upon so many these past days. Nothing I write could give comfort like the words of our Creator, our source of every perfect gift. If we claim to be His, we also know it is our privilege and responsibility to be His instruments of peace and comfort, sources of help to those who have suffered loss.

The God of Refuge

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, even though the earth be removed,
And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;
Though its waters roar and be troubled,
Though the mountains shake with its swelling.

Psalm 46:1-3

The God of Comfort

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
The Father of mercies and God of all comfort,
Who comforts us in all our tribulation,
That we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble,
With the comfort with which
we ourselves are comforted by God.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4

God’s People, His Instruments for Good

Then the King will say to those on His right hand,

“Come, you blessed of My Father,
inherit the kingdom prepared for you
from the foundation of the world:
for I was hungry and you gave Me food;
I was thirsty and you gave Me drink;
I was a stranger and you took Me in;
I was naked and you clothed Me;
I was sick and you visited Me;
I was in prison and you came to Me.”

Then the righteous will answer Him, saying,
“Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You,
or thirsty and give You drink?
When did we see You a stranger and take You in,
or naked and clothe You?
Or when did we see You sick,
or in prison, and come to You?”

And the King will answer and say to them,
“Assuredly, I say to you,
inasmuch as you did it
to one of the least of these My brethren,
you did it to Me.”

Matthew 25:34-40
