- David consults with his commanders and leaders to assemble priests and Levites and those with pasture lands to bring the ark to Jerusalem.
- Incident of the ark and death of Uzzah (See 2 Samuel 6:6-11).
1-3 David Established at Jerusalem (See 2 Samuel 5:11-15)
8-12 Defeat of the Philistines
Same as 2 Samuel 5:17-25 with this difference: There it says (v. 21) that the Philistines abandon their idols, and David and his men carry them away. Here it says that at David's command the idols are burned. Not really a discrepancy, because of course they could have carried them away to be burned, but 2 Samuel leaves one with the impression that the idols would be stored or used in some way.
1 Chronicles 15 (See also 2 Samuel 6:12-23)
1-29 The Ark Brought to Jerusalem
- David builds houses for himself in Jerusalem and also a tent for the ark to reside in.
- This time he plans the transport of the ark in a much more dignified and respectful manner and heeding the law of Moses.
- He assigns Levites and priests to the task (sons of Kohath, Merari, Gershom, Elizaphan, Hebron, and Uzziel - 862 in all).
- He summons priests Zadok and Abiathar, and Levites Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel and Amminadab to sanctify themselves and their families before bringing the ark.
- This time they carry it on poles, as Moses commanded, rather than on a cart.
- He appoints Levites to provide the music for the celebration - musicians and singers by name.
- They sacrifice bulls and lambs in thanksgiving for God's help in carrying the ark.
- Note: David makes mistakes -- some even resulting in death, like this one with the loss of Uzzah -- but he doesn't give up the pursuit of pleasing God. He is humble enough to correct those mistakes and move forward.
- As mentioned in 2 Samuel, when Michal sees David bringing back the ark, leaping and dancing, she "despises him in her heart."
1-36 Ark Placed in the Tent (Most of these details not in 2 Samuel)
- As part of the celebration, they offer sacrifices, and David distributes food.
- He appoints Levites to lead a worship celebration
- He appoints Asaph and his family to the singing of praises
- Song of praise (Parts of which are repeated in Psalm 96; 105; 106)
- Give thanks, sing, Seek the LORD and his strength, remember his wonderful works
- Remember his covenant
- He has protected his people
- Tell of his salvation , his glory, his works, he is to be revered above all gods, who are but idols
- Let the people and the earth tremble before him and rejoice
- Save us and rescue us
- And all the people say "Amen!"
- David leaves care of the ark in the hands of Asaph and his family, and Obed-edom and his family, with Obed-edom and Hosah as gatekeepers
- He leaves Zadok and his family of priests to offer twice-daily sacrifices, as commanded in the law.
- Then all people go home and David to his home to bless his household.
