Jeremiah 6
-30 The Imminence and Horror of the Invasion
-5 Flee for safety, for the evil out of the north sees you as a lovely pasture. They will surround you and destroy you by night.
-7 I have told them that you must be punished, for "as a well keeps its water fresh, so she keeps fresh her wickedness." Quite a concept: "fresh wickedness." A reminder that evil is not passive. It grows and finds new paths, new ways to be wicked, forever turning what is inherently good into something evil and destructive, e.g. medicinal plants to addictive drugs; marriage into legalized cohabitation by homosexuals.
-9 Take warning, Jerusalem, or I will make you a desolation. I will tell your enemies to glean your remnants like a vine.
-12 Jeremiah: And who shall I warn? No one wants to listen. I am tired of holding in the wrath of the LORD. The LORD: Pour my wrath all over the streets, over children, young men, husbands, wives, and the aged.
-15 They are all greedy, selfish, acting shamefully yet not ashamed, saying "Peace, peace, where there is no peace."
-17 I told them to seek the ancient, good paths; I told them to heed the trumpet; but they refused.
-19 Hear, O earth: I am bringing disaster on this people because they reject my teaching.
-21 What good to me is your expensive incense, your burnt offerings? I will make each one of you stumble and fall, parents and children, neighbor and friend.
-23 Here come merciless people from the north, riding on horses with bow and javelin.
-26 You will be helpless victims, in pain like a woman in labor, daring not to go into the field or walk in the road. Put on sackcloth and mourn.
-30 The LORD to Jeremiah: I have made you a refiner of my rebellious people. They are bronze and iron and will be refined with intense fire, yet the refining is in vain, for the wicked are not removed.
