Hebrews 3

1-6 Moses a Servant, Christ a Son
  • Jesus was faithful in God's house, just as Moses was.
  • Yet Jesus is worthy of more glory, because Jesus was faithful over the house, as a son, while Moses was a faithful servant in the house.
  • The builder of the house receives more glory than the house.
  • We are his house "if we hold firm the confidence and pride that belong to hope." Interesting concept here, which I don't remember seeing before, that our hope in Christ is a source of confidence and even pride. (NASV and ASV translate this "boast of our hope" and "glorying of our hope.")
7-19 Warning Against Unbelief
  • The Holy Spirit says, Do not harden your hearts, as they did in the wilderness, testing me after seeing my works for 40 years, after which I swore they would not enter into my rest. This sounds like something God would say, doesn't it? Yet it's a message from the Holy Spirit, speaking of his works. Further evidence that no distinction is made among the members of the godhead. They work as one.
  • Take care, and exhort one another, so that you don't succumb to the same unbelief and become "hardened by the deceifulness of sin." Hardened is a scary word. It means that sin, being deceptively attractive, will cause our hearts to be hardened to the point where we don't care anymore.
  • Those who sinned 1) had been under Moses' leadership; 2) fell in the wilderness
  • Unbelief condemned them.
