1-27 Impending Disaster (in poetry format)
1-4 So you shall know I am the LORD:
- The end has come: I will loose my anger upon you
- I will punish you for your abominations
- My eye will not spare; I will have no pity
5-9 So you will know it is I the LORD who strikes:
- Disaster after disaster, then the end
- Tumult, not reveling
- My eye will not spare; I will have no pity
10-13 Your position and wealth will mean nothing.
- Pride has budded; violence has turned into wickedness
- Their wealth will be gone; neither the seller nor buyer will rejoice
14-20 Your sword will have no power
- You’ll blow the horn, but none will fight
- The sword is outside; pestilence and famine are inside
- Survivors who escape will be found
- Gold and silver will be worthless, because you can’t eat them
21-27 So they will know I am the LORD:
- I will hand them over to strangers
- The worst nations will take their houses
- They will have no peace in anguish, no visions from prophets, no instructions from priests, no counsel from elders. They will receive what the rebellious say they want in a time of prosperity: for prophets to stop warning and elders to stop giving them advice. Yet when trouble strikes, and they want counsel, prophets, priests and elders will not be there.
- The king and prince will be in despair. Royalty won’t be there for them, either – they’ll have their own problems.
