Ezekiel 40

1-47 Vision of the New Temple

1-2 In the 25th year, 1st month, 10th day of exile – 14 years after Jerusalem was destroyed (13 years since Ezekiel’s prophecy in 33:21), God takes Ezekiel in a vision to a high mountain in Israel.

3-4 There he sees a man, with shining appearance, linen cord and measuring reed, who tells him to look and listen carefully, for what he sees he must declare to Israel.

5-16 Holding the reed, which is 6 long cubits long (a long cubit is a handbreadth more than a cubit), the man measures

  • the thickness and height of the wall (1 each)
  • the threshold (1)
  • recesses (1 wide, and 1 deep)
  • space between the recesses (5)
  • and so on to the rest of the inner court: the vestibule, other recesses, the gateway opening, a barrier, the gate
  • description of windows and shutters

17-23 Measurement and description of the outer court and gate to the outer court

24-27 Measurement and description of the south gate

28-37 Measurement and description of the south, east, and north gates of the inner court

38-34 Description and measurements of furniture in a chamber in the vestibule of the north gate: where sacrifices were to be prepared

44-47 Description and measurement of chambers for singers and priests

48-49 The Temple

48-49 The man takes Ezekiel inside the temple, measuring the gate, vestibule and steps leading up to it.
