Those Who Signed the Document
1-27 Lists of those who signed the sealed document, beginning with Nehemiah the governor, then the priests, the Levites and their associates, and the leaders of the people.
Summary of the Covenant
28-31 All the priests, Levites, gatekeepers, singers, temple servants and all “who have separated themselves from the peoples of the land” promise to follow the law given by Moses, to
- Not marry their sons or daughters to people of the land
- Not to buy from people of the land on the Sabbath
- Forego the crops and forgive debts every seven years
32-37 Promises of giving one-third of a shekel annually for the temple and celebrations; wood offerings; first fruits of their land, livestock, produce, and firstborn of their sons, according to the law, and tithes for the Levites. According to Numbers 18:15-16, they were to “redeem,” or make recompense for, the firstborn of an unclean animal or a firstborn son.
38-39 The priests and Levites shall store the tithes in the temple storehouse for the temple officials. “We will not neglect the house of our God.”
