Malachi 1

1 An oracle of the Lord to Israel by Malachi

Israel Preferred to Edom

2-5 Israel can see how God has loved them by comparing themselves with Esau, whom He did not bless, with whom He is angry forever.

Corruption of the Priesthood

6-8 As my sons and servants, you priests show disrespect for me by offering polluted food on my altar: blind and lame animals. Your governor would not accept such offerings.

9-14 I would rather you’d shut the doors of the temple to keep you from my altar, since you despise it. My name is great among the Gentiles, but you profane it. Cursed be the one who vows to give one sacrifice then replaces it with one that is blemished. A phrase in verse 13 hits home: “What a weariness this is….” I confess feeling that way sometimes on Sunday morning, as I prepare for the day – having to be ready and have lunch prepared before we try to leave the house by 7:30. Rather, I should anticipate showing Him gratitude by worshipping Him and being with His people.
